Close-up of volcanic "hailstones" from Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona
The "hailstones" are about 1 centimeter in diameter and fairly consistent in size. At this outcrop, the "hailstones" are all stacked together (grain-supported). In other exposures along the Hailstone Trail, the spheres are widely separated by fine ash.
