Golden Gate Photo - Solar Eclipse of June 10, 2002
Fine Art Photography of the Partial Solar Eclipse of June 10, 2002 from San Francisco.

This partial solar eclipse occurred in the late afternoon/early evening of Monday, June 10, 2002. It was visible from San Francisco between 5:06 and 7:19 PM Pacific Standard Time. The maximum coverage of the Sun by the Moon occurred at 6:16 PM as 65% of the Sun's disc was blocked by the Moon.

This is the eclipse as seen from a pier just east of Fort Point. This was taken near the end of the eclipse, when the Sun was low enough to fit into this view.

Some technical notes on how the top 2 images were created: I used two 3-stop graduated neutral density filters to darken the sky. In addition, I burned in the sky around the Sun the equivalent of 3 more stops in the darkroom. This allowed both the details of the overall image and the solar disc to be visible, as well as resulting in the 'midnight sun' look to the sky.

Eclipse in Tree Shadows - Palace of Fine Arts

Eclipse in Tree Shadows - Palace of Fine Arts

Looking at the columns of the Palace of Fine Arts near the Marina District of San Francisco, you can see the effects of the pinholes of light emanating through the trees during the eclipse. These pinholes of light act the same as a pinhole made in a box, which is often used to project an image of the solar eclipse that is safe to view. The idea here is to capture them when the wind is calm, which is tricky since during solar eclipses, the change in sunlight might trigger heating/cooling effects that may create wind. Also, this part of San Francisco is typically windy.

Also taken from the Palace of Fine Arts, here you can see the crescent-shaped spots of light through the trees. Both this image and the one above were taken at about the time of the maximum coverage of the Sun's disc (65%).

This is the view of a front yard garden off Marina Drive next to the Exploratorium. It too was taken near the time of the maximum coverage of the Sun's disc.
